CLEVELAND \u2014 Start your engines, Cleveland<\/a>! One of your own is competing to become America’s next drag superstar.<\/p>\n

Earlier Thursday, MTV officially revealed the cast of the newest season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Cleveland-based drag performer Onya Nurve is one of 14 queens competing in the Emmy-winning reality competition show’s 17th season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Nurve has made a name for herself in Northeast Ohio’s drag scene for the past several years. She was named Cleveland’s best drag performer in the Cleveland Scene’s\u00a02023 Best of Cleveland<\/a>\u00a0issue and\u00a0won the title of Mx. Zephyr<\/a>\u00a0in the first Zephyr Drag Takeover competition in Kent a year prior. Currently, Nurve is the inaugural\u00a0ArtReach fellow for Haus of Transcendent<\/a>, a Cleveland-based LGBTQ nonprofit.<\/p>\n

Nurve and her work has been featured in articles by the Scene, the Buckeye Flame and\u00a0<\/span>3News media partner cleveland.com<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her “Meet the Queens” feature on the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” YouTube channel, Onya described herself as the “Andy Warhol of the drag scene.” She considers her drag to be “a balance of drama, theatre, art, sprinkled on top a lot of Blackness and glamour.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“The drag scene in Cleveland, I would consider it pretty competitive,” she told MTV. “You’ve got your pageant queens, your alternative entertainers, you have your kings, and you have a lot of newer entertainers. There’s a lot of influence in the college scene, of the students doing drag. Burlesque is super popular. There are only a handful of Black entertainers in Cleveland so I think I stood out in that way…”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Nurve is the second Cleveland queen to compete on “Drag Race” and the first since the show’s debut season, when\u00a0Akashia<\/a>\u00a0became the show’s first established “lip sync assassin<\/a>” en route to placing seventh.<\/p>\n
