Explorar el mundo que nos rodea crea una oportunidad \u00fanica para desarrollar nuestro conocimiento m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de nuestra experiencia vivida. Es innegable que la mayor\u00eda de nosotros podemos articular la experiencia vivida, los recursos disponibles y las necesidades de nuestras respectivas comunidades; sin embargo, podemos tener dificultades para comprender comunidades con un contexto diferente. La educaci\u00f3n crea un camino para desarrollar habilidades t\u00e9cnicas que pueden complementar lo que hemos aprendido a lo largo de la vida.<\/p>\n

Es cada vez m\u00e1s importante aprovechar la educaci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica para perfeccionar las competencias culturales de los m\u00e9dicos actuales y futuros. Muchos programas cl\u00ednicos est\u00e1n forjando asociaciones con filantrop\u00eda y organizaciones comunitarias (CBO) como Haus of Transcendent (HOT) para abordar los determinantes sociales de la salud (SDOH). Esta transformaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n es evidente en la forma en que los Centros de Servicios de Medicare y Medicaid (CMS) distribuyen los reembolsos. El a\u00f1o pasado, CMS cre\u00f3 un nuevo c\u00f3digo de reembolso para que los proveedores facturen a Medicare cuando eval\u00faan (G0136) a los pacientes para detectar necesidades sociales relacionadas con la salud. CMS tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 incorporando la equidad en salud en sus programas de reembolso basados en el valor, lo que significa que abordar las disparidades en salud beneficiar\u00e1 los resultados de las organizaciones de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica.<\/p>\n

Un ejemplo de esto es un programa de medicina familiar de la Facultad de Medicina Osteop\u00e1tica de la Universidad de Ohio (OUHCOM), conocido como Transformative Care Continuum (TCC)<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

El a\u00f1o pasado, OHUCOM invit\u00f3 a HOT, Healthy Lakewood Foundation y Community Legal Aid a participar en un panel de TCC para discutir c\u00f3mo estamos identificando y eliminando barreras sociales que a menudo conducen a peores resultados.<\/p>\n

Me abri\u00f3 los ojos cuando Jordi Luke, fundador y director ejecutivo de HOT, me habl\u00f3 de los desaf\u00edos m\u00e9dicos, de vivienda y socioecon\u00f3micos que enfrentan las personas LGBTQI2S+. Naturalmente, cuando la organizaci\u00f3n a la que pertenezco, SNMA (Asociaci\u00f3n M\u00e9dica Nacional de Estudiantes) estuvo interesada en realizar una campa\u00f1a de beneficios para apoyar a las personas LGBTQI2S+, inmediatamente me vino a la mente HOT. Me comuniqu\u00e9 con Jordi y estuvieron felices de asociarse con nosotros. <\/p>\nHOT ha convertido en una prioridad asociarse con m\u00e9dicos actuales y futuros. A menudo nos encontramos con preguntas cl\u00ednicas cuando apoyamos a personas LGBTQI2S+ que est\u00e1n en crisis. Es muy com\u00fan que las personas Queer tengan muchas necesidades de salud insatisfechas debido al costo, la baja educaci\u00f3n sanitaria y\/o experiencias negativas previas con un m\u00e9dico. No basta que un m\u00e9dico tenga buenas intenciones si carece de la experiencia necesaria para brindar atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica que responda culturalmente a las necesidades de todos sus pacientes.

Como m\u00e9dico de urgencias, creo que es imperativo que conozcamos y estemos expuestos directamente a comunidades con experiencias vividas diferentes a la m\u00eda. Atiendo a pacientes de diversas culturas e idiomas, por lo que esto s\u00f3lo me convertir\u00e1 en un m\u00e9dico m\u00e1s capacitado. Como directora de extensi\u00f3n cl\u00ednica de HOT, he tenido oportunidades invaluables para guiar y conectar a personas m\u00e9dicamente desatendidas con los servicios cl\u00ednicos. Aprender sobre las barreras y los tipos de discriminaci\u00f3n que deben atravesar las personas LGBTQI+ me ha ayudado a conectar los puntos entre los servicios cl\u00ednicos y los determinantes sociales de la salud.<\/p>\n
